In August 2016, Kaiterra made the first map of Beijing’s outdoor air quality calculated directly from a network of indoor monitors.
Kaiterra’s first office was co-founders Liam & Jess’ living room, 12 square metres.

The Kaiterra Story
Liam Bates and Ken Ying set off on the journey of a lifetime. They travelled for 2 months on motorcycles from the heart of Tibet across the plains of Mongolia and finally to Shanghai. The two ran into gangs, had their motorcycles stolen, and finished the trip great friends.
In January 2014, Liam proposed to his Canadian fiancée, Jess. She accepted and moved to Beijing, so that they could be together. As a young child, Jess had asthma, but she seemed to have grown out of it years ago – until she moved to Beijing.
Origins Technology spent its first year in Jess & Liam’s living room, trying to find solutions to the problem of air pollution. At one point there were 3 people working on tables and 3 people working on the floor.
Origins is growing fast, and our team works out of a beautiful courtyard in the heart of Beijing, which we call the Breathing Space. When the weather (and air) is good, we sit in the sunshine and design cool new products to improve the lives of our users and the environment around us.
One day, we hope to fix the root sources of air pollution, and make the world a more beautiful place!
